Cooke, Hostetler and Klein Earn Spots on ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Teams

NEW YORK -- A trio of Columbia University women's soccer players were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I Team, it was announced by the College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA) on Tuesday. Senior Lauren Cooke was named to the first team for the second time in her career (2008), while senior Kelly Hostetler and junior Lillian Klein garnered second-team status.

Cooke has been an integral part of Columbia's backline since her first season at Columbia, and has played a team-best 1,515 minutes this year. The San Rafael, Calif. native was named Ivy League Player of the Week on Sept. 20 after scoring a goal in a victory over St. John's. In the classroom, Cooke is a mechanical engineering major and maintains a 3.74 GPA.

Hostetler has joined her senior teammate as a starter on defense over the past three seasons, and has enjoyed a career year in 2010. The team's designated free-kick and corner-kick specialist, Hostetler has registered a team-best seven assists through 16 games, which ranks in a tie for ninth on the single-season list at Columbia. A political science major, Hostetler holds a 3.48 cumulative GPA.

Klein has been a stalwart in goal this season for the Lions, posting an Ivy League-best seven shutouts and 0.76 goals against average. Her seven clean sheets stands as the third-best single-season total in Columbia history. A double major in English and American literature, Klein carries a 3.47 cumulative GPA.

Nominated athletes must be in their second full year at their institition and a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale). All those on the All-District first teams wil be placed on the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration.

The Lions (9-4-3) will close out their 2010 season on Saturday, Nov. 6 at Harvard.
