PHILADEPHIA - The Columbia women's soccer team fired off nine shots Friday night, but was unable to get one past Penn goalkeeper Sarah Banks, as the Quakers defeated the Lions, 1-0, at Rhodes Field.

The first 45 minutes went by scoreless, but each team had its chances. Isabel King had the first two shots on net for Columbia in the 11th and 27th minutes. Chelsea Ryan had a shot attempt of her own between King's, but it was blocked away by the Quakers' defense.

The Columbia defense did a good job in the opening stanza limiting Penn's scoring opportunities. The Quakers managed just three shots the entire half and only one on goal in the 40th minute from Clara Midgley that was stopped by Columbia's keeper Grace Redmon.

In the early portion of the second half, Columbia and Penn traded shot attempts, as Lainey Prioleau missed wide for the Lions, while Penn's Kerry Scalora sent a shot over the net.

Scalora would come right back though with another shot in the 67th minute and this time she would hit her target. From 25-yards out, Scalora sent a blast just over Redmon to break the scoreless tie and give Penn the 1-0 advantage. Erin Beck received credit for the assist on the play.

The Lions would get shot attempts from Shannon FitzPatrick, Beverly Leon and Elly McGuffog over the final 33 minutes, but each attempt missed the goal as Penn was able to hold on for the 1-0 victory.

Columbia drops to 5-6-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the Ivy League, while Penn improves to 7-4-0 and 3-0-0 in conference.  The Lions will be back in action Sunday evening at NJIT for a 7 p.m. matchup, before hosting Princeton Oct. 13.
