PRINCETON, N.J. – Senior Beverly Leon scored two goals on Saturday, Oct. 19 to anchor a Columbia women’s soccer team comeback attempt at Princeton that ended in a 3-3 draw. For the third game this season, the Lions finished with a tie to move to 7-4-3 and its second tie in conference play for a 0-2-1 record.
Columbia jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after a quick score in the opening three minutes of play. After a blocked shot by Natalie Melo, Leon rebounded the deflection and fired in the goal for her fifth of the season.
The Tigers responded to the early Columbia score with three unanswered goals in the first half. The Princeton offense worked quickly with its first pair of scores coming in a two minute span. At the 12th minute mark, Princeton found the back of the net for the tie and followed it with a score at the 14th minute mark to take a 2-1 lead. Midway through the first half the Tigers extended the lead to 3-1 with a goal at the 22nd-minute mark to take a two score lead at the break.
In the second half, the Lions offense raised the pressure on the Tigers. In the first five minutes or play, Columbia began its comeback trail with a goal at the 50th-minute mark. Kimmy Bettinger found Alexa Yow moving up the field and the junior made a solid play to beat the goalkeeper for the score.
With the score at 3-2, the Lions would get an opportunity to tie the game after a Princeton foul in the box led to a Columbia penalty kick. Leon fired the game tying shot off the penalty kick in the 77th minute for her second score of the game. At 3-3, both teams would hold on for the remainder of regulation to send the game into overtime.
Columbia earned two corner kicks in the first overtime period for solid scoring chances, but the Tigers denied both tries. In the second overtime, the Lions defense put together a clutch performance denying five Princeton shots. First-year goalkeeper Allison Spencer finished the game with nine saves.
Up next, the Lions will travel to Hanover, N.H on Saturday, Oct. 26 to continue Ivy League play at Dartmouth.
