RIVERDALE, N.Y. -- A pair of first-years provided all the offense the Columbia University women's soccer team (9-2-3) would need to extend its unbeaten streak to eight with a 2-0 win over Manhattan on Monday evening. Coleen Rizzo scored on a beautiful strike in the 37th minute to record the eventual game-winner, while classmate Chelsea Ryan tallied an insurance goal off a corner kick by senior captain Kelly Hostetler in the 85th minute.

Senior Lindsay Danielson had a stellar night in net, recording nine saves in her first action this season to tally the first full-match shutout of her career.

Playing just 48 hours after their pivotal win over Princeton on Saturday, the Lions came out a bit sluggish in the opening half and got a boost from their bench. A trio of reserve forwards would team up for Columbia's first tally near the close of the first stanza. Sophomore Lexi Nichols made a nice play up the left side to find junior Marissa Schultz near the edge of the box.

Schultz turned to face goal, and dropped it off to Rizzo who was making a run up the middle. Rizzo had a go from about 25 yards out and clanged her shot off the crossbar and into the upper-right corner of goal to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.

Manhattan, who had won two straight entering the match, led the shot battle in the first half, 12-9, but the Lions had the better of it in the corner kick category, 4-1.

The Lions would continue to substitute liberally in the second half, as 18 different players played 20 minutes or more. The Lady Jaspers had one of their best opportunities at the 70-minute mark, as Alex Iovine put a shot on frame that Danielson was in perfect position for.

Columbia would finish off the match's scoring in familiar fashion, as Hostetler took a corner kick and found Ryan. The first-year midfielder knocked the ball over the goal line for her second goal of the season. From there, the Lions would fend off any potential Jasper attack to complete their eighth shutout of the year.

The Columbia women's soccer team will play its final home match of the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 23 against Dartmouth, in another important Ivy League tilt. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., with a brief ceremony for the team's four seniors -- Danielson, Hostetler, Keri Nobil and Lauren Cooke -- coming prior to the start of the match.
