Women’s Soccer Blanks Fordham, 2-0

BOX SCORE | VIDEO RECAP

NEW YORK - Grace Redmon made a season-best eight saves to help lead the Columbia women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Fordham Friday night at the Columbia Soccer Stadium. Coleen Rizzo and Beverly Leon each notched their second goals of the season.

The opening minutes of the game were played in the middle third of the field, with neither team finding any ground into its offensive zone. Rachel Madacsi would record the first shot attempt of the contest in the eighth minute, with Columbia goalkeeper Redmon making the save.

The Lions would respond with two shots on goal of their own. After Shannon FitzPatrick's attempt was stopped, Columbia received a corner kick. The second attempt came after Erin Falk placed a nice ball right in front of the net where Rizzo knocked it into the back of the net through a multitude of traffic to give Columbia the 1-0 lead.

Kristina Maksuti had the only three shots the rest of the half for Fordham. Her first two went high and wide, respectively, and her last attempt was blocked by the Columbia defense. The box score at the half was relatively even. Fordham held a slight edge in shots, 6-5, and fouls, 7-6, but Columbia earned one more corner kick, 3-2.

Both offenses came out firing in the opening stages of the second half. Columbia tallied five shot attempts, three of which required Fordham keeper Rachel Suther to make a save. The Rams posted three shots over the first 15 minutes with Redmon stopping both attempts on goal. Despite all the offense, neither team was able to put a goal on the board.

In the 76th minute, the Lions would break through to take a 2-0 advantage. Rizzo was able to intercept the ball as Fordham was attempting to clear its zone and create a rush with teammate Leon. Rizzo led Leon with a nice pass, and after making one Fordham defender miss, Leon rocketed the ball past Suther for the tally.

Fordham had numerous scoring opportunities over the final 10 minutes of play, but Redmon and the Columbia defense held strong and preserved the shutout.

Redmon finished with a season-high eight saves to earn her second shutout of the 2012 season. Fordham finished the game with 22 total shots, the highest total the Lions have faced this season.

Columbia remains at home, hosting Marist in a Sunday afternoon matchup. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Columbia Soccer Stadium.
