STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Columbia softball split a doubleheader at Wagner, falling 17-7 in game one, before rallying from a 2-1 deficit to win 5-4 in game two.

In game one, Wagner jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two runs in the bottom of the first inning.  The Seahawks then added 15 runs in the bottom of the third on 10 hits and one error.

The Lions did not go without a fight, scoring two runs in the top of the fourth on RBI singles by Macy Shrum and Kayla Shimoda.

The Lions added five more runs in the top of the fifth on three hits, including doubles by Shimoda and Mackensy Lakian, but that is where the rally ended for the 17-7 final score.

In game two, Columbia took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Shimoda led off with a walked and was sacrificed over by Alix Cook, and moved to third on a ground out by Emily Snodgrass.  Shimoda eventually scored on a wild pitch to give Columbia the lead.

The one-run advantage was short lived, as Wagner scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning on just two hits, including a home run.

Columbia answered right back with a four-run third inning. Lakian led off with a walk and Shimoda sacrificed her over.  Cook singled to right field, advancing Lakian to third.  Nicole Borchard reached on an error, which scored Lakian and advanced Cook.  Alyssa Rodia gave the Lions the lead for good with a three-run homer to close out scoring in the inning.

Wagner added runs in the fifth and sixth inning, but Brooke Darling pitched out of a seventh inning jam to strand the tying and winning run on base and give Columbia the win.

The Lions had just four hits in game two, but Rodia’s blast proved to be the difference.

Columbia returns to action on Saturday, March 22 as they host Iona for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
