Softball Treks to Cornell for Four Games This Weekend
NEW YORK – The Columbia softball team will hit the road for a four-game series with Cornell this weekend. The teams will play a pair of doubleheaders on Saturday, Apr. 19 and Sunday, Apr. 20 – both set for 12:30 p.m. starts.
The Lions (18-18, 5-7) got back on track with a doubleheader sweep of Saint Peter’s on Thursday, marking their final non-conference games of the season. In game one, Columbia belted three homers to come away with an 8-6 victory. The Lions followed up with a 5-2 win in the nightcap.
The Big Red are in the midst of an eight-game homestand and check in with a 14-20 overall record and a 5-5 mark in Ivy League Play. Cornell also played on Thursday, splitting with Albany. Last weekend, the Big Red dropped 3-of-4 at Penn in Ivy League South Division action.
Cornell relies on its power bats to produce runs. Meg Parker is hitting .317 with six homers and 19 RBI. Jessica Bigbie and Sophie Giaquinto also have driven in 19 RBI, while Michiko McGivney leads the squad with a .397 batting average.
Alyson Onyon is the Big Red’s No. 1 starter with a 7-8 record, 3.74 ERA and 85 strikeouts. Parker has 13 starts in the circle, posting a 5-8 record, 5.16 ERA and has fanned 66 batters.
A FLAIR FOR THE DRAMATIC
Columbia has four walk-off wins in 2014, and most recently, used a Liz Caggiano three-run shot to win the opener of its series against Princeton. Additionally, the Lions have played 10 games decided by one-run and are 6-4 in those contests.
LIONS DIG THE LONG BALL
For the second consecutive year, Columbia has set a team record in home runs. The Lions have 25 dingers this season, surpassing the old mark they set in 2013 with 19 long balls. Caggiano’s six big flies during her junior campaign is tied for the second most in program history and she has 13 in her career, good for second on the all-time list – six behind Maggie Johnson ’10CC.
