Softball Defeated by Lehigh Twice
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Columbia softball team fell to Lehigh, 5-1 and 4-3, in its final non-conference games of the year on Tuesday afternoon.
The Lions (21-23) will wrap up the 2013 campaign with a four-game set against Penn this weekend. The first two games will be played at the Columbia Softball Stadium on Friday, April 26, beginning at 2 p.m.
Columbia 1, Lehigh 5
The Moutain Hawks (31-14-1) set the tone right away in the opener, posting three extra base hits to score three times in the bottom of the first inning. In the bottom of the second Liz Lucas recorded her second double of the game to plate two more runs to give Lehigh a 5-0 cushion.
Columbia was stymied by starting pitcher Ashley Quigley for six innings before breaking through against relief pitcher Kelsey Lee in the seventh.
Columbia 3, Lehigh 4
Emma Capetz gave Lehigh the lead in the bottom of the first of game two with an RBI single and added two more insurance runs in the third.
An error on a force play at second moved Rosie Roessel to third base, and Roessel was plated on a sacrifice fly. With two down, Capetz drove in her second run of the contest with a base hit up the middle to extend the margin to 3-0.
Columbia came all the way back in the fourth, scoring three runs that were driven in by the bottom of the lineup. Alix Cook started things off with a single and stole second, leading to a Kayla Shimoda single to bring her the next 120 feet. Shimoda successfully swiped second to put her in scoring position for Mackensy Lakian, who singled to cut the deficit to 3-2. First-year Alyssa Swearingen followed with her third triple of the year to bring in Lakian and even the score.
The game remained knotted until the bottom of the sixth when the Mountain Hawks surged ahead. With two outs, Jessica Long and Cassie Waggy kept the inning alive with singles to put runners on the corners. The next batter, Roessel knocked in the game-winning run on an infield single and the Lions were retired 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh.
