Liz Caggiano Earns Ivy League Softball Rookie of the Week Nod For 2nd Time This Year
This is Caggiano’s second Ivy League Softball Rookie of the Week award of the season as she also garnered the honors back on March 6. Columbia (12-29, 6-10 Ivy League) is tied with Penn for the most Rookie of the Week selections this season with three. First-year Brooke Darling was an honoree on April 3.
Caggiano was a menace at the plate this past week, hitting .467 with three home runs, seven RBI, three runs scored and five walks. She posted a 1.067 slugging percentage and a .600 on-base percentage.
The rookie from Bellaire, Texas, was unstoppable in the Lions’ two games at Fairleigh Dickinson on April 18, going a combined 4-of-5 at the plate with two home runs, three RBI and two walks against the Knights.
In the final game of Columbia’s four-game series against Princeton, Caggiano set the tone early with a three-run homer to center in the first inning and the Lions rolled to an 8-2 win.
On the season, Caggiano is hitting .283 and has team highs of five home runs and 16 walks. She and Morgan Cook are tied for the team lead in RBI at 17 and Caggiano’s seven doubles rank second on the squad.
Caggiano has enjoyed a late-season resurgence at the plate. She has reached base safely in the Lions’ last eight games and over that stretch she is batting a team-best .476 with three homers, two doubles, eight RBI, three runs scored and six walks. Her OPS in that span is an incredible 1.593 (1.000 slugging percentage, .593 on-base percentage).
Fellow Lions first-years Darling and Kayla Shimoda were named to the Ivy League Weekly Honor Roll for their strong performances this week.
Darling posted a 2-3 record and a 1.08 ERA in five appearances and three starts. She compiled 15 strikeouts over 26.0 innings of work and tossed three complete games.
Shimoda enjoyed a fine week at he plate, hitting .467 with three doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. Her slugging percentage was .667 and her on-base percentage was .529. Shimoda also had three multi-hit games this week.
