High School Standouts Shih, Davenport To Join Columbia Men's Golf In 2012-13
NEW YORK - Recruiting coast-to-coast, Columbia men's golf team will add two standout high school golfers to its 2012-13 roster in New Jersey's Harrison Shih and California's John Davenport.
"The tradition continues. Columbia and our team have again attracted some of the country's brightest minds and most talented junior golfers," Columbia Director of Golf and head men's golf coach Rich Mueller said. "Our team and I could not be more pleased with Harrison and John joining our program next fall. Both bring a sense of passion and determination that will allow us to continue our winning traditions."
Harrison Shih - Bergen Catholic | Saddle
Shih is a three-year letter-winner at Bergen Catholic and has been one of the Garden State's top junior golfers. The Polo Golf Rankings ranks him at No. 20 among members of the class of 2012 and No. 41 among all high school golfers. The National Junior Golf Scoreboard ranks Shih 111th in the class of 2012 and 223rd among all high school golfers. Golfweek ranks him at No. 2 among all New Jersey juniors, No. 53 in the overall class of 2012 and No. 121 among all junior golfers in the nation.
Shih had a monster junior year in 2011, winning the individual title of the 2011 NJSIAA/MGA Tournament of Champions at Neshanic Vallley Golf Course after carding seven birdies en route to a 5-under 67. His 67 was the second-lowest score in New Jersey state championships history. Shih was a 2011 AJGA Rolex All-American Honorable Mention, 2011 AJGA HP Scholastic All-American, 2011 FCWT Academic All-American and The Star-Ledger 2011 New Jersey State Player of the Year. He garnered first-team all-league, all-county and all-state honors each of the past three seasons.
Shih has competed in seven AJGA events this year and has enjoyed three top-3 finishes, including one victory. He claimed the 2011 AJGA Northern Virginia Junior title after matching his career best with a 67 in the final round. He also enjoyed a tie for third at the 2011 Genesis Junior at White Beeches and a tie for second at the 2011 CorseMax/Philadelphia Runner Junior. This past summer, Shih also tied for fifth at the 9th MGA Carter Cup and tied for third at the 90th NJSGA Junior Championship.
John Davenport - Corona del Mar | Newport
Davenport has lettered in each of the past three years at Corona del Mar and has emerged as one of California's best. The Polo Golf Rankings rank him at No. 235 among all members of the class of 2012 and No. 456 among all high school golfers. The National Junior Golf Scoreboard ranks him 130th in the class of 2012 and 303rd overall. Golfweek ranks Davenport at No. 571 overall, but has no ranking for him class-wise or state-wise since he has only competed in four recognized events.
Davenport was a key part of Corona del Mar's three consecutive Pacific Coast League titles from 2009-11. He finished second in the 2011 Pacific Coast League Finals with a score of 75-71-146. Individually, he competed in the CIF Finals in 2009 and 2010 and in the CIF Regional as a junior last year. He has been named to the All-Pacific Coast League first team in each of the past three seasons and was an FWCT Third Team All-American in 2009-10.
When he was just a 15-year-old sophomore, Davenport won the 2010 FCWT PGA West Classic, carding a 71-72-143. He took 20th in the 2010 FCWT 16-18 National Championship. Over the past two years, Davenport has totaled five top 25 finishes at AJGA Open events, including a ninth-place showing at the AJGA Stockton Sports Commission Junior Open. In 2009, he took seventh at the AJGA Junior All-Star presented by CBIZ MHM.
