Men's Golf Battles Through Stormy Weather, Takes 3rd At Navy Spring Invitational
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Columbia men’s golf team battled brutal weather conditions on Sunday to take third place in the Navy Spring Invitational at the Naval Academy Golf Course.
Nineteen of the 20 teams saw their scores go up significantly from the first round to the second round due to the inclement weather. Columbia, which was tied for second entering the day, took third place with a 292-314—606 (+38). Penn took the team championship after shooting 294-299—593 (+25).
Junior Michael Yiu and sophomore Jordan Lee led the Lions, tying for 13th place at 9-over 151. Penn’s Max Marsico won the individual title with a 73-70—143 (+1) to lead the 111-player field. Yiu shot a 7-over 78 in the final round en route to his fifth top-15 finish of the year. Lee carded a 72-79—151 (+9) and the 13th-place tie is his highest finish of the season.
Sophomore Andrew Kim and senior Brendan Doyle tied for 20th at 10-over 142. Kim had a final-round 8-over 79 and has placed in the top 20 in five events this season. Doyle tied Yiu for Columbia’s best final round score with a 7-over 78 and the senior now has four top 20s on the year.
Junior Ford Fischer rounded out the Lions’ team at 75-84—159 (+17) and tied for 66th.
The Columbia men’s golf team heads to Galloway, N.J., on Friday for the 2012 Ivy League Championship at Galloway National Golf Club.
