Stellar First Round Has Women’s Golf in Third at Brown Bear Invitational

BARRINGTON, R.I. – The Columbia women’s golf team will begin the final round of the Brown Bear Invitational Monday just six stroke back of the lead after completing an impressive first round with three student-athletes in the top 20.

Junior Michelle Piyapattra is pacing the Lions through the first 18 holes. Piyapattra carded an opening-round 76 and stands in a tie for sixth, just one stroke behind the individual leaders.

Classmate Jane Dong finished the first round just two strokes back, and will start Monday in a tie for 13th.

First-year Spenser Krut, fresh off co-medalist honors at the Roar-EE Invitational, is tied for 18th after posting a 79 Sunday. Lisa Combs opened the Bear Invitational with an 82 and is in 37th with 18 holes left to play. Monique Ishikawa, also coming off co-medalist honors at the Roar-EE Invitational, is tied for 41st after shooting an 83 Sunday.

Play continues Monday with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. at the par-72, 6,068 yard Rhode Island Country Club.
