NEW YORK – The Columbia women’s golf team will compete in its second tournament of the spring season when it heads to California to take part in the Monterey Bay Invitational hosted by Drake University from March 16-18.
Del Monte Golf Club in Monterey, Calif. will serve as the host course for the three-day, 54-hole event. The opening round will begin with a shotgun start at 2:30 p.m. EST, with play commencing the following two days at 10:30 a.m. EST.
The six-team field includes: Central Oklahoma, Columbia, CSU Bakersfield, Drake, Northern Colorado and Rutgers.
Columbia kicked off the season with a ninth-place showing at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational at the Klipper Golf Course in Kane’Ohe Hawai’i last week. First-year Jackie Chulya and junior Lisa Combs led the Lions, tying for 18th place. Chulya shot the only round under par for Columbia, posting a one-under 71 in the second round of the tournament.
Senior Michelle Piyapattra also cracked the top 25, finishing tied for 22nd, just one stroke behind Chulya and Combs.
The Lions competed in the Monterey Bay Invitational during the spring 2012 season, capturing second in the 14-team event. All five Columbia players in that tournament finished in the top 25, led by current seniors Jane Dong and Piyapattra. Dong finished tied for sixth, her highest finish that season, while Piyapattra ended tied for 12th. Combs concluded play tied for 25th.
