Women's Golf In 5th Place Following First Round of Monterey Bay Invitational

MONTEREY, Calif. - The Columbia women's golf team sits in fifth place following Sunday's first round of the Monterey Bay Invitational at Del Monte Golf Club. Sophomore Jane Dong is tied for 11th place.

The 14-team field had to deal with adverse weather conditions on Sunday, which included rain showers in the morning and afternoon. Columbia shot 33-over 321 in its first 18 holes on the par 72, 6,018-yard course at Del Monte Golf Club. The Lions sit 18 strokes back of Missouri State, which leads all teams at 15-over 303. Winthrop (27-over 317) and Houston Baptist (29-over 319) round the top three.

Dong led the way for the Lions with a 6-over 78 to enter the second round tied for 11th place. She fired a 38 on the front nine and a 40 on the back.

First-year Lisa Combs, senior Robin Lee and sophomore Michelle Piyapattra also contributed to the first-round team score. Combs is tied for 20th at 8-over (40-40), Lee is tied for 26th at 9-over 81 (45-36) and Piyapattra is tied for 32nd at 10-over 82 (41-41). Senior Lynda Kwon rounded out the team with an 13-over 85 (45-50) and she is tied for 47th.

First-year Joanna Henry competed as an individual and is tied for 58th after shooting 15-over 87 (44-43).

Tournament play continues on Monday with another 18 holes.  Tee times begin at 11:00 a.m. Eastern Time. Henry will start the day at 11:16 a.m. (ET) while Columbia's five-player team will tee off with eight-minute intervals starting at 1:40 p.m. (ET).
