STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Columbia sophomore Michelle Piyapattra lowered her score by a stroke on Friday, shooting a 5-over 77 in the second round of the NCAA East Regional at Penn State’s Blue Course.

Piyapattra sits in a tie for 77th at 78-77—155 (+11) and needs to lower her score by at least five strokes in Saturday’s final round to have a chance of cracking the top 40, where she could possible qualify for one of two individual spots for the NCAA Championships. Texas A&M’s Katerina Ruzickova remains atop the 126-player field at 5-under 140. South Carolina leads all teams at 6-over 582.

Piyapattra started the day from the first tee and faired better on the front nine. She went 3-over 39 on the front nine to open the second round with a birdie on the par-4, 386-yard third hole. On the back nine, she shot 2-over 38 with a birdie on the par-4, 446-yard 18th.

Piyapattra will start Saturday’s final round from the 10th tee with the 8:25 a.m. She is paired with UNC-Greensboro’s Fanny Cnops and Furman’s Laura Wearn.

The top eight teams and two individuals not on those teams will advance to the NCAA Championships. Fans can follow Piyapattra’s progress throughout the NCAA East Regional through her Golfstat live results player scorecard here.
