Final Results | VIDEO: On The Phone With Coach Williams

FRESNO, Calif. -- Sophomore Michelle Piyapattra fired a 1-over 73 on in Tuesday’s final round of the Fresno State Lexus Classic to finish in third place. The Columbia women’s golf team took 13th place.

“Obviously we would have liked to have played better, especially finishing up today,” Columbia head women’s golf coach Kari Williams said. “We learned a lot about the golf course and playing and getting better. We have three events left this spring including the Ivy League Championship and we’re going to try to get better in every one of them.”

Piyapattra finished at 70-77-73--220 (+4). She has now placed in the top 3 in five of the Lions’ six events this year. The Lions started on the back nine on Tuesday and Piyapattra opened with five pars and a birdie on the 11th hole. She came on strong on the front nine, shooting par of better (birdies on No. 1 and No. 6) on eight holes. Piyapattra tied for third in the 75-player field with nine birdies for the tournament. She tied for second in par 5 scoring (4.75, -3), fifth in par 4 scoring (4.17, +5) and ninth in par 3 scoring (3.17, +2). Her 33 pars tied for 13th.

“Michelle finished third and she had to battle back from making some bogeys yesterday,” Williams said. “The 36-hole day was a pretty long day for us and coming out of the gate with the 36 straight away, there was some fatigue at the end. But she came back today and she put together a pretty good round with 73 and found her way back into third.”

The Lions shot 312-311-324--947 (+83) for the tournament. Cal State Fullerton took first place at 29-over 893. San Jose State’s Madeleine Ziegert took the individual title with a 70-72-73--215 (-1).

Sophomore Jane Dong had her best round of the tournament with a 7-over 79 on Tuesday to tie for 53rd at 81-80-79--240 (+24).

Senior Lynda Kwon finished tied for 57th at 78-79-86--243 (+27). Kwong played her best golf on the par 5s, where her 5.00 (E) scoring average tied for 12th.

Senior Robin Lee tied for 60th at 83-75-86--244 (+28). She tied for sixth in par 5 scoring with a 4.92 (-1) average.

Rounding out the Lions team players, Lisa Combs took 72nd with an 86-81-89--256 (+40).

The Columbia individual competitors included Joanna Henry (36-over 252, 69th), Ashley Zambito (48-over 264, 73rd) and Maria Lu (63-over 279, 74th).

The Lions will next compete in the Del Monte Invitational at Monterey Bay from March 18-20 at Del Monte Golf Course in Monterey, Calif.
