Women's Golf Surges Up Leaderboard Following Round 2 Of Monterey Bay Invitational
MONTEREY, Calif. - The Columbia women's golf team surged up the leaderboard into a tie for third place following Monday's second round of the Monterey Bay Invitational at Del Monte Golf Club.
The Lions posted a 21-over 309 to jump from fifth to a tie for third place in the 14-team tournament. That score was the third-best of the day and it marked a 12-stroke improvement over the team's first round score, which was largely the product of playing in adverse weather conditions. Tournament host Missouri State leads the field at 34-over 610. Wichita State is second at 52-over 628 and Columbia and Winthrop are tied for third at 54-over 630.
Four Columbia golfers improved their scores in the second round. Only the Lions and Missouri State have five golfers in the top 26. Sophomore Jane Dong is tied for eighth place after shooting a 5-over 77 on Monday. She sits at 78-75-155 (+11), seven strokes back of the individual leader, Chiara Citterio (4-over 141) of Missouri State. Citterio is competing as an individual.
Fellow sophomore Michelle Piyapattra jumped from a tied for 32nd to a tie for 18th after a five-stroke improvement in the second round. She enters Tuesday's final round at 82-77-159 (+15).
Seniors Robin Lee and Lynda Kwon helped make Columbia one of just three teams to post four second-round scores in the 70s. Lee improved by two shots and is tied for 21st at 81-79-160 (+16). Kwon made one of the biggest jumps up the leaderboard, going from a tie for 47th to a tie for 24th after she enjoyed a nine-stroke improvement. Kwon sits at 85-76-161 (+17).
First-year Lisa Combs rounded out the Lions' five-golfer team with a 10-over 82 in the second round and enters the final 18 holes tied for 26 at 80-82-162 (+18).
First-year Joanna Henry is tied for 64th at 87-88-175 (+31).
The Lions will wrap their stay in the Golden State on Tuesday with the final 18 holes of the Monterey Bay Invitational. Henry will start in a two-golfer golfer group from the 10th tee at 12 p.m. (EST) while te Columbia team starts from the first tee with eight-minute intervals beginning at 12:40 p.m. (EST).
