NEW YORK - Former Ivy League champion Sara Ovadia '09CC qualified on Monday for the LPGA's Safeway Classic Presented by Coca-Cola at Pumpkin Ridge in North Plains, Oregon. Ovadia will be the first Columbia women's golfer to play in an LPGA event, which will begin this Friday, August 17.

"Sara developed into a good college player and became competitive on the National level with her play in the North/South and Western golf tournaments," head coach Kari Williams said.

"She changed Columbia Women's Golf and made it possible for us to recruit the team we have today," Williams explained. "This is a great opportunity for her and her professional career and I am very impressed with her commitment and dedication to her game. We wish her the very best this week at the Safeway Classic!"

Ovadia turned professional after she graduated and has been playing in several developmental tours, including the LPGA Futures Tour, for the past three years.

The 54-hole Safeway Classic will begin on Friday, August 17 and conclude on Sunday, August 19. Suzann Pettersen of Norway defeated Na Yeon Choi in a one-hole playoff to capture the title at the 2011 Safeway Classic.
