First-Years Excel at Roar-EE Invitational, Propelling Columbia to Third Place Finish
SUFFERN, N.Y. – The Columbia women’s golf team hosted the 7th Annual Roar-EE Invitational Friday at the Spook Rock Golf Course in Suffern, N.Y. Despite rainy conditions all morning, sometimes extremely heavy, 18 holes were able to be completed with the Lions finishing in a tie for third.
Boston University claimed the team title, shooting a combined score of 338. The score was two strokes better than second-place Siena and three ahead of Central Connecticut State and Columbia.
Four individuals laid claim to the medalist honors, as play was called following 18 holes, including any tiebreaker. First-years Spenser Krut and Monique Ishikawa both shot 79s for Columbia, while Dartmouth’s Jane Lee and BU’s Kristyna Pavlickova matched them to create the four-way tie.
The individual wins at the Roar-EE Invitational were the first of both Ishikawa and Krut’s careers at Columbia. Ishikawa previously finished as the runner-up at the Bucknell Invitational, while Krut’s best finish prior to Friday’s event was a tie for 26th at the St. John’s Intercollegiate. Note: Ishikawa’s tally would not count towards the team score, as she was entered into the tournament as an individual and not part of Columbia’s top five.
Play began Friday morning with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. on the par-72, 6,008 yard course. When play concluded approximately five hours later, the Lions had two top-15 finishes. Behind Krut was sophomore Lisa Combs who shot an 85 to finished tied for 13th. Jane Dong claimed a top-30 finish, shooting an 88 to come in tied for 27th. Joanna Henry wrapped up the scoring lineup for Columbia with an 89 to finish tied for 33rd.
Columbia had three other individuals competing in addition to Ishikawa. First-year Lilette Mocio produced an 18-hole score of 86 to finish tied for 16th. The finish is one spot better than Mocio’s previous best placing of 17th at the Bucknell Invitational. Sophomore Maria Lu matched Henry’s 89 to also finish tied for 33rd. Senior Ashley Zambito rounded out the Columbia competitors, standing tied for 42nd after shooting a 91.
It’ll be a quick turnaround for the Lions, as they head to Barrington, R.I. to compete in the Brown Bear Invitational Sunday, April 14 – Monday, April 15. The 14-team field will feature Roar-EE participants: BU, Dartmouth, LIU-Brooklyn, Quinnipiac and Siena. Joining them will be the host Brown, Harvard, Lehigh, Rutgers, Sacred Heart, St. John’s, Seton Hall and Yale.
The Bear Invitational is the final regular season tournament before Columbia heads to the Ivy League Championships from April 26-28 at Trump National in Bedminster, N.J.
