Women’s Golf Runs Away with Title at Monterey Bay Invitational

MONTEREY, Calif. – The Columbia women’s golf team put together an impressive performance the last three days at Del Monte Golf Course in Monterey, Calif. capturing the top spot at the Monterey Bay Invitational by 43 strokes. The Lions placed five individuals in the top-five, headlined by the individual champion, Monique Ishikawa.

"The team played very well on a difficult golf course," commented head coach Kari Williams after the tournament. "Rachel and Monique both closed out their rounds with incredible up and down par saves on the most difficult hole on the course to finish 1, 2."

"We have had a really good start to the spring season and have had good rounds from every one of the players," continued Williams. " I am very proud of the team and our play, despite our indoor only practice prior to our first event."

For the second straight day, Ishikawa carded the lowest 18-hole score, tying with teammate Rachel Shi and Drake’s Hadley, with a 76. Ishikawa’s three-round score of 226 (76-74-76) edged Shi by just one stroke. The win is Ishikawa’s second of her career.

The final round was the second straight in which Shi recorded a 76, giving her a tournament score of 227 (75-76-76) and placing her second, her best finish at Columbia.

Senior Jane Dong shot a 77 for the second straight day, finishing two strokes back of Shi in third with a 229 (75-77-77). Sophomore Lisa Combs took sole possession of fourth after shooting a 79 in the final round.

First-year Jackie Chulya notched her best finish at the collegiate level, finishing tied for fifth. The Thailand native shot an 80 in the final round, finishing four strokes back of Combs. Classmate Camilla Vik earned a tie for 10th, registering an 80 in each of the final two rounds to finish with a 241 (81-80-80).

Joanna Henry rounded out the Columbia competitors, shooting an 81 in the final round to tie for 13th.

The Lions will next be in action when it participates in the Seton Hall Pirate Invitational at Trump National in Bedminster, N.J., the site of last year’s Ivy League Championship.
