NEW YORK - The No. 70 Columbia women's tennis team began the 2013 season Sunday against the No. 6 Georgia Bulldogs as part of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend tournament. Facing Georgia on its home facility, the Hopkins Indoor Courts, the Lions fell 4-1.

Georgia took the doubles point with victories in the No. 1 and 3 matches, opening a 1-0 lead to start the match. Columbia's team of Nicole Bartnik and Crystal Leung won the No. 2 doubles contest by a score of 8-6 over Mia King and Lauren Herring.

The Bulldogs improved their lead to 2-0, with a win in the No. 4 singles match, but first-year Kanika Vaidya got the point back for the Lions with a victory in the No. 3 match. Vaidya, ranked 85th in the nation, upset No. 54 Kate Fuller in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Unfortunately, it would be the lone match won in Columbia's favor. No. 24 Bartnik and No. 81 Bianca Sanon played a tight matches in the top two spots, but both lost in two sets.

Columbia will be back on the court Monday morning at 9 a.m. in the consolation match against No. 40 Oklahoma State who was downed by No. 72 Georgia State, 4-3.
