UPDATE: No. 29 Sanon/Vaidya Upset No. 6 Colton/Mira at Riviera/ITA All-American Championships
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – The 29th-ranked Columbia women’s tennis duo of Bianca Sanon and Kanika Vaidya stunned the No. 6 doubles team in the nation to advance to the quarterfinals on the opening day of the main doubles draw at the 2013 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships on Thursday. Sanon/Vaidya overcame No. 6 Courtney Colton and Lauren Mira of Vanderbilt with a convincing 8-2 victory.
The Columbia partnership opened main draw action in the round of 32 by downing the 13th-ranked doubles team of Beatrice Gumulya and Yana Koroleva from Clemson, 8-5.
Sanon/Vaidya will continue main draw doubles play on Friday at 12:00 p.m. ET.
Both Sanon and Vaidya had a solid run in singles action earlier this week.
No. 104-ranked Sanon played her way past the first two rounds in the singles qualifying draw. She opened with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over No. 103 Simona Parajova of TCU in the first round of the 64-player qualifying draw.
For the second time in less than a week, Sanon upset No. 67 Kendal Woodard of Georgia Tech in a thrilling tiebreaker, 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-3, to advance to the round of 16. Sanon also overcame Woodard at the Atlanta Classic last Friday, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5).
Sanon then battled No. 99 Maria Belaya of William & Mary for a spot in the main singles draw on Wednesday, but Belaya made a comeback to win 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-0.
Vaidya defeated Marina Bohrer of Michigan State in the pre-qualifying first round, followed by a 6-2, 6-2 win over Klaudia Gawlik of McNeese State in round two. She then faced Jamie Loeb of North Carolina in the third round on Sunday, falling 6-3, 6-4.
