Women’s Tennis Ranked No. 57 in First ITA Poll of 2014
SKILLMAN, N.J. – The Columbia women’s tennis team will begin the 2014 spring season ranked No. 57 in the nation, as announced by the ITA on Jan. 2.
“The timing of these new rankings is great as I know our players are working to prepare for the upcoming season,” commented head coach Ilene Weintraub. “Hopefully, it gives them a little extra motivation to continue to train at their prospective homes during winter break. I told them championships are won in the off-season and what you are doing when no one is watching over you is what matters most. Our team goal remains the same, we intend to make the post-season either by winning the conference outright or earning a high enough ranking to get an automatic bid.”
Yale is the only Ivy League school ranked ahead of Columbia, coming in at No. 36.
In singles, sophomore Vaidya and senior Sanon are each nationally ranked. Vaidya will start the season slotted No. 75, while Sanon comes in ranked No. 101.
In the Northeast Regional poll, Columbia has a stronghold on the top singles and doubles rankings. Vaidya and Sanon come in ranked No. 1 and 2, respectively, in singles, and trail only Leung and Jiang in the doubles poll.
Columbia will begin the season on Jan. 24 with a trip to Durham, N.C. to take on No. 10 Duke.
