Women’s Tennis Bolsters Roster with Four Recruits for 2014-15

NEW YORK – Head women’s tennis coach Ilene Weintraub has announced the addition of four incoming recruits for the 2014-15 season. The newcomers will join eight returners who helped Columbia reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history last season.

Rima Asatrian – Florham Park, N.J. – Allied National HS (Calif.)
Asatrian has been a strong player on the amateur circuit over the last season, posting a 22-3 record, including a 14-1 mark against other five-star recruits, as ranked by Tennis Recruiting Network. In the Babolat Recruiting Lists, Asatrian boasts the top ranking in New Jersey, is slotted second in the Middle Atlantic and is considered the No. 24 best recruit in the nation.

In two June 2014 tournaments, she was the winner of the U.S. Open National Playoffs Eastern and reached the doubles finals of a Pro Circuit event held in Bethany Beach, Delaware.

Laura MacMullin – Oakville, Ont. – St. Mildred’s-Lightbourn School
MacMullin journeys to Columbia from north of the border, hailing from Oakville, Ontario, where she is one of the top amateurs. Since 2010, MacMullin has had rising amounts of success from U14 through the U18 ranks, culminating with top-12 finishes in singles competition at Indoor and Outdoor Nationals and a finalist showing in doubles at Indoor Provincials. 

Competing at the U14 level in 2010, MacMullin posted a top-eight showing at Outdoor Provincials, while finishing top-12 at the U16 level. She saw more success at U16 in 2011, finishing top-eight at the Outdoor Provincials and top-12 at the Indoor Nationals in singles action. She earned a doubles championship at the Outdoor Provincials. The next year saw a mix of accomplishments at U16 and U18. The recipient of the 2012 National Sportsmanship Award, MacMullin was a top-eight finisher at U16 Indoor Nationals and a semifinalist in doubles. At the U18 Indoor Provincials, she notched a top-eight singles showing and a quarterfinalist finish in doubles.

Adi Milstein – Boca Raton, Fla. – Laurel Springs Independent Study (Calif.)
Milstein heads north from the Sunshine State to join the Lions in Morningside Heights. The four-star recruit has a 16-13 amateur record, with eight wins coming against four- and five-star recruits. In the Babolat Recruiting Lists, Milstein ranks 16th in Florida, 28th in the Southeast and 78th nationally.

Over the last five seasons she has played well on clay and hard courts. She reached the round of 64 or better at three National Clay Court tournaments, including a quarterfinals appearance in 2010. She also reached the quarterfinals of the National Hard Court tournament that season, while finishing third in doubles on both surfaces. Milstein’s other doubles accomplishments include two quarterfinal appearances at the Easter Bowl in 2011 and 2012, as well as a runner-up finish at the Florida State Doubles Championship. In 2014, she reached the round of 16 of the singles bracket and quarterfinals in the doubles bracket at a professional tournament in Santiago, Chile.

Alexandra Solovyev – Foster City, Calif. – Hinsdale Central HS (Ill.)
Solovyev joins the Columbia women’s tennis program with an accomplished resumé in high school and amateur events. At Hinsdale Central, Solovyev competed as one of the top-two singles players for three seasons, placing third at the state tournament as a sophomore and runner-up as a junior.

As an amateur, she has posted a 28-13 record, with a combined 22 wins over four- and five-star recruits. A five-star recruit herself, Solovyev is considered the second-best prospect in Illinois, the fifth-highest ranked player in the Midwest and holds a No. 41 national ranking, as ranked by the Babolat Recruiting Lists on Tennis Recruiting Network.
