Women's Tennis Captures Doubles Title at Cissie Leary Invitational
PHILADELPHIA - The No. 29 duo of Bianca Sanon and Kanika Vaidya of the Columbia women's tennis team played their way to become doubles champions at the 17th annual Cissie Leary Invitational on Sunday.
The partnership was joined by two additional Lions on the final day of the tournament, hosted by Penn at Hamlin Courts. Crystal Leung and Tina Jiang each reached the semifinals round, falling just short to Alex D'Ascenzo and Dena Tanenbaum of Cornell, 8-4.
Earning a first-round bye, Sanon/Vaidya got right to work in the round of 32, easily handling Ksenia Berestetska and Karolina Maksimava of Akron, 8-0. The success continued in the round of 16 with a convincing 8-1 victory over Kristina Hovsepyan and Cassandre of Maryland, and continued with an 8-5 victory over host Penn's Kana Daniel and Jaime Yapp-Shino in the quarterfinals.
Pitted against Sivan Krems (Princeton) and Katherine Whiteaway (Penn State) in the semifinal round, Sanon/Vaidya proved their dominance with an 8-0 victory.
Up next, the Lions will compete at the Georgia State Invitational in Atlanta, Ga. from Sept. 27-29.
