NEW YORK - Junior wrestler Shane Hughes and first-year women’s tennis player Tina Jiang have been named Columbia Student-Athletes of the Month for February.
Hughes, who repeats as male athlete of the month, was selected to the All-Ivy League first team after going undefeated in all five Ancient Eight bouts. He won each of those matches with bonus points, posting three falls and two major decisions to earn 26-of-30 possible points to rank among the best in the Ivy League. Hughes is undefeated this calendar year and has moved into the top-10 in the WIN and AWN national rankings in the 174 weight class.
Jiang posted a combined record of 8-0 (four singles, four doubles) record in February. Jiang competed as the No. 3 singles player, winning three matches in straight sets and coming from behind to defeat Caroline Wegner of No. 43 Memphis in three sets. In doubles competition, her and partner Crystal Leung moved up to No. 28 in the latest ITA poll and Jiang’s strong play has propelled the Lions to No. 35 in the nation, their highest ranking ever.
