NEW YORK - Senior baseball captain Jason Banos and first-year sensation Michelle Piyapattra have been named the Student-Athletes of the Month for April.

Banos batted .326 in 26 starts with four home runs and 22 runs batted in during the month of April.  Banos earned Ivy League Player of the Week honors on April 19 after helping lead Columbia to a 4-1 week and three wins in four games vs. Cornell.  The outfielder ripped eight doubles, scored 17 runs and reached base at a .416 clip during the month.

Throughout the month, Banos delivered in a number of clutch situations, coming through with game-winning RBI in wins over Manhattan, Cornell and Penn.  He closed out his fantastic career with a bang, batting .643 with a home run and eight RBI in a four-game series with Penn on April 29-30.  In the final game of the series, Banos drove home the tying run and the go-ahead runs in Columbia's riveting 11-10 comeback victory as he went 4-for-5 with four RBI in his final collegiate contest.  It capped a career in which Banos finished in the top five in career base hits, runs scored, doubles, runs batted in, walks and games started.  He also ranks among the top ten in total bases and home runs in program history.

Piyapattra was a force to be reckoned with in the month of April, becoming just the second golfer in Columbia women's golf history to earn medalist honors at the Ivy League Championship. The first-year phenom also recorded a win at the Fifth Annual Roar-EE Invitational, as she fought through brutal weather conditions to take the rain-shortened event by two strokes. At the conference tournament, Piyapattra truly proved her mettle as she recorded the best individual score on both Friday and Saturday, then fired a career-best round of three-under par 69 on the final day en route to a 10-stroke victory. The win also gives Piyapattra the opportunity to qualify for the LPGA Shoprite Classic in Atlantic City, N.J. in late May.
