NEW YORK - One of the highlights of Columbia Athletics' 91st Annual Varsity C Celebration was the presentation of the Marion R. Phillips Watch and the Dwight D. Eisenhower Watch, the two highest academic awards given in the athletics program.
The watch awards are presented to Columbia Athletics senior student-athletes earning the highest cumulative grade-point averages and at least two varsity letters. Cindy Chen (volleyball) earned the Marion R. Philips Watch and Jesse Vella (men's soccer) earned the Dwight D. Eisenhower watch.
Chen, a statistics major in Columbia College with a 3.95 grade point average, has been an integral part of the recent success of Columbia's volleyball program.
Vella, an Earth and Environmental Engineering major, he has been named to the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science with a 3.93 grade point average, started every game for the Lions' men's soccer program in the last two seasons.
