NEW YORK – Junior wrestler Shane Hughes and junior women’s fencer Nzingha Prescod have been named Columbia Student-Athletes of the Month for January.

Hughes posted an impressive 6-0 mark, wrestling at 174 pounds Of his six wins, two came via major decision and three came by pin, earning bonus points for Columbia in dual matches. His win-streak has catapulted him to a No. 11 national ranking by the Amateur Wrestling News in his weight class.

Prescod went 30-3 in the foil during the month to lead all women’s fencers. After trying to help the team at sabre, the 2012 Olympian switched back to her natural weapon last month and won 14-of-15 bouts at both the St. John’s Super Cup and NYU Invitational on Jan. 25-26 to help the women’s team go a combined 8-2. Internationally, Prescod took a silver medal at the Foil Grand Prix World Cup in Poland to ascend to No. 6 in the world.
