NEW YORK – Columbia University Athletics announced September 5 that all ten Lions football games during the 2006 season will be broadcast live on WSNR, 620 AM, the Sporting News Radio affiliate in the Metropolitan New York City area. The broadcast schedule will begin on September 16, when Columbia hosts Fordham in the fifth annual Liberty Cup game. The initial Columbia Football Today pregame show will start at noon, with kickoff scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
"We are proud to add professional radio to our coverage of Columbia Lions football," says Alex Oberweger, Associate Athletics Director for Athletics Communications. "Increased exposure for our football program in the crowded sports marketplace of New York City is a major imperative for Columbia Athletics."
"Commercial broadcasts on WSNR will be an important addition to the coverage provided by student radio station WKCR-FM", said Barry Neuberger, Associate Athletics Director for Sports Marketing. "Our broadcasts will allow us to promote other Athletic Department marketing initiatives and offer potential sponsors additional inventory to reach the Columbia audience." All games will be simulcast over gocolumbialions.com.
WFAN sports anchor Jerry Recco has been named as the play-by-play announcer for all broadcasts. Recco, who has been a mainstay of WFAN for ten years, is also a familiar voice to Sirius Satellite Radio fans, where he has hosted the "Between the Hashmarks" college football show and last year was the Update Anchor for Sirius' NFL Radio coverage.
"We are excited to have Jerry Recco as the 'Voice of the Lions'", said Neuberger. "His wealth of experience and relationship with local sports fans make him a natural choice to be our play-by-play man."
"I couldn't be more excited at the opportunity to call Lions football and basketball this season," Recco says. "It's an absolute privilege to be joining the Columbia program. I also look forward to being involved with the rich tradition of Ivy League athletics."
Recco is a 1998 graduate of New Jersey City University. He currently resides in Hazlet, New Jersey.
All 10 football games will be simulcast online at gocolumbialions.com, the official athletics website of Columbia University Athletics. Visitors to gocolumbialions.com will also be able to see an enhanced video webcast featuring the WSNR audio feed via the SideLION Pass feature.
