Archery Opens 2012 Season at Eastern Seaboard FITA

NEW YORK – The 2012 archery season got underway at the Eastern Seaboard FITA on Sunday, January 22 in Mays Landing, N.J. The tournament was hosted by the Atlantic Cape Community College. Senior Sarah Chai claimed the top spot in the Collegiate Female Recurve Division for the third straight year, while senior Sydney Shaefer took top honors in the Compound division.

Shaefer opened the season with the highest score for the Lions, firing 556, edging teammates Mary Quien (545) and first-year Gladys Velez-Caicedo, who shot a 459 in her first collegiate competition. 

In recurve, Chai led Columbia, shooting 531 to open the year. First-year Sarah Bernstein also broke the 500 plateau, shooting 517, along with Anna Harrington, who scored 507. Bernstein and Harrington finished second and third, respectively. Grace Kim and Marilyn He rounded out the top five with scores of 497 and 487. 

Also competing in the recurve division for Columbia were Miryung Yang (478), Aaqilah Chambers (342), Kate Cwynar (308) and Sara Lavenhar (253). 

Columbia will return to action Saturday, January 28 at the CTAA Indoor State Championships in Manchester.
