VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Competing at the National Fencing Championships in Virginia Beach, Virginia earlier this month, a number of Columbia fencers made an impact.
In men's epee competition, sophomore Alen Hadzic continued his run from the NCAA Championships, when he finished second in his weapon. Hadzic also placed second at the National Championships, defeating Matt McGrath 15-13 to reach the semifinals.
Incoming first-year Brian Ro finished third and another incoming first-year, Jake Hoyle was seventh in men's epee. Hoyle defeated the 2012 NCAA champion John Yergler from Princeton to advance to the top 16.
In women's epee, junior Lydia Kopecky posted her best National result with a fifth-place finish. Sophomore Katya English was 28th in women's epee.
Incoming first-year Margaret Lu was second in women's foil and senior Sammy Roberts was 15th in women's sabre.
In men's sabre, first-year Will Spear was eighth, capping a strong season in which he was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Year and the Most Outstanding Performer of the Ivy League meet in February.
