NEW YORK - The Columbia University fencing team ranks among the best according to the first edition of the 2013 national coaches poll released by CollegeFencing360.com earlier this week. The women received a No. 3 ranking while the men checked in at the seventh position.

CollegeFencing360.com is the official home for the national collegiate fencing poll. Two additional polls will be released throughout the season: one in mid-February, and one in early March following the 2013 NCAA regional competition.

The last time the women matched a No. 3 ranking was during the 2008 season, which also happens to mark the last time the Lions fenced their way to the Ivy League crown.

Off to an undefeated start, the Columbia women are 7-0 in non-conference action, while the men sit at 6-1, respectively. Competing in their first major collegiate meet of the season at the Penn State Invitational on Jan. 12, the Lions won nine out of a possible 10 dual matches, as the women's team won all five contests, and the men won four out of five.

In posting its spotless 5-0 record that day, the women's team surprised the host Nittany Lions, 15-12, edged Duke and North Carolina by 14-13 scores, and trounced Temple and Drew. The men also defeated Duke in a tight 17-10 match, while topping Drew, North Carolina and Haverford more easily. The men's sole loss was to Penn State, 22-5.

A big 10-meet weekend awaits the Lions as Columbia returns to NCAA action at St. John's on Saturday, Jan. 26th and NYU on Sunday, Jan. 27th.
