QUEENS, N.Y. -- As good as they were Saturday at NYU, Columbia Fencing was even better Sunday in the St. John's Super Cup.

The women's fencing surprised with four wins in five matches, and the men matched them, despite suffering their first loss of the season, by one bout to Penn State.

No wonder head coach Michael Aufrichtig told his teams, " I am so proud of all of you." He continued, "I always believed in all of you but now I believe in this team!!!!"

The men won a close bout with St. John’s, 14-13, to start the competition, but doubled up Ivy League foe Harvard and dispatched the Buckeyes. Despite eking out 5-4 decisions in the sabre and epee portions of their match against the Nittany Lions, a 6-3 defeat in the foil proved too much to overcome.

Geoffrey Loss helped the Lions cap the day on a high-note, knocking off three Notre Dame sabrists to lead the men to a victory over Notre Dame.

Sophomore Jake Hoyle led the squad with an 11-4 record on the day, while Loss and Adam Mathieu picked up 10 wins in the competition.

The women came away with a pair of 15-12 victories over the Johnnies and Crimson before dropping a 14-13 heartbreaker to Ohio State. Despite 5-4 triumphs in the foil and epee, Ohio State came away with the narrow win after edging out a 6-3 decision in the sabre.

As followers of the Lions have come to expect, a dominating performance by the female foilists helped Columbia bookend competition with two more 15-12 triumphs over Penn State and Notre Dame.

The trio of Nzingha Prescod, Margaret Lu and Jackie Dubrovich went a combined 38-7 to highlight the event.

The Lions have this weekend off before hosting Sacred Heart, Vassar and NYU on Wednesday, Feb. 5.
