Prescod and Dubrovich Earn Solid Top 16 Finishes at Shangai Foil World Cup
SHANGHAI – International success continued for Columbia fencing standouts Nzingha Prescod and Jackie Dubrovich, who each represented Team USA with top-16 finishes at the Shanghai Foil Grand Prix World Cup last weekend.
Prescod fenced her way to a ninth place finish, while Dubrovich was close behind at 15th place in the women’s foil competition. Leading the U.S. with solid performances, Prescod and Dubrovich fell in their final bouts to the eventual gold and silver medalists of the competition.
As the 11th seed of the tournament, Prescod was exempt from the pools and preliminary rounds and started off with a 15-12 win over Mariana Gonzalez of Venezuela in the table of 64. In the table of 32, the sophomore and 2012 London Olympian defeated Mi Na Kim of Korea, 15-10.
Pitted against Russia’s Larisa Korobeynikova for the third time this season, Prescod was up for a challenge in the table of 16. Despite each fencer coming into the competition with one win apiece under her belt, Korobeynikova pulled off a 15-11 victory before going on to win the gold medal.
It was a big day for Dubrovich, a three-time Junior World Team silver medalist who was competing in a Senior World Cup for the first time. The first-year finished 5-1 in the pools on Friday and toppled Naoko Wada of Japan by a 15-5 score in the first round.
The table of 32 victory did not come as easily, but Dubrovich stuck it out to edge Seo In Hong of Korea, 8-7.
In the table of 16, Dubrovich fell by a 10-4 score to silver medalist Diana Yakovleva of Russia.
