Weapon Squad Championships are the Next Test for Columbia's Fencers
NEW YORK – After the Columbia women finished second and the men third at the 2012 Ivy League Championships, the Lions are back in action this Sunday, February 26 at the United States Collegiate Weapon Squad Championships, hosted by NYU, beginning at 7:30 a.m.
The meet will take place between the different weapon squads – sabre vs. sabre, foil vs. foil and epee vs. epee – among the nation's elite teams. Each team will fence the normal three competitors per weapon in all three weapons and the winner will be determined based on cumulative touches.
The Columbia women went 5-1 at the recent Ivy League Championships, only dropping an 18-9 decision to eventual league champion Princeton. The Lions did notch a 14-13 win over Harvard and a 22-5 triumph over Yale on the second day behind a strong sabre squad of senior Sammy Roberts and juniors Essane Diedro and Loweye Diedro.
On the men's side, the Lions finished 2-3 at the Ivy round-robin meet, suffering three close losses (15-12 to Penn, 15-12 to Harvard and 14-13 to Princeton). Rookie Will Spear was named the Ivy League Men's Rookie of the Year and also gained Most Outstanding Performer honors after the meet.
