CANCUN, Mexico - Last week at the Pan American Zonal Championships, there were a number of current and former Columbia fencers who performed well on the national stage.

Current assistant coach Daria Schneider '10CC was part of the gold medal winning United States women's sabre team. While women's sabre will not be contested as a team sport at the 2012 Olympics, the team's gold medal at the Pan Am games and its bronze medal at the World Championships this spring show that the U.S. is one of the top squads in the world in women's sabre.

In women's foil, 2012 Olympians Nicole Ross '12CC and Nzingha Prescod '15CC won gold at the Pan Am Championships. Ross and Prescod will be part of the U.S. Olympic women's foil team later this summer in London.

Individually, Prescod took home the bronze medal at the Pan Am Games. Ross finished eighth in women's foil.

Their Olympic teammates, James Williams '07CC and Jeff Spear '10CC, helped the Americans take gold in the men's sabre competition. Williams will be competing at his second straight Olympic Games in London and Spear will join the U.S. men's sabre team as an alternate.

In individual men's sabre, Spear gained the silver medal for the United States and Williams took bronze. Current Columbian Mel Rodriguez '14CC also won a bronze medal, fencing for his native Puerto Rico.
