Head Fencing Coach Aufrichtig to Speak at Columbia's TEDx

NEW YORK – Columbia head fencing coach Michael Aufrichtig has been selected as a speaker at the 2014 TEDxColumbiaSIPA on Tuesday, May 8 at Miller Theatre.

TEDxColumbiaSIPA is organized by graduate students from Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA). Our event is designed to spark authentic, impassioned and open-minded discussion in our community.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience.  The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.

“I am very excited to participate in the TED Talk here at Columbia,” said Aufrichtig. “TED is all about ideas worth sharing and I will be discussing some of the ways I thought differently to help turn our team around from 2-16 to 27-3. There are so many other great speakers on the lineup, from New York Times best Sellers to the oldest yoga instructor in the world. It will be a fun day.”

Aufrichtig, recently lauded by the New York Times for his unconventional approach to coaching, utilized his ‘deliberate focus practice’ method combined with statistical analysis to transform Columbia’s fencing team into champions. In his talk, the former software salesman, with no prior coaching experience, will share some of the secrets behind his successful “Moneyball” approach.
