Malone's Hat Trick Leads Lions to 4-3 Win Over Fairfield

Box Score    Interview with Coach Freeman

NEW YORK - Columbia's junior forward Liz Malone scored three goals in the Lions' come-from-behind win over Fairfield on Sunday afternoon, September 23.  The Lions trailed 2-0 late in the first period and 2-1 at the half, before scoring three consecutive goals.

Fairfield scored just under two minutes into the game when Shealyn Testa sent a pass from Nikki McLucas to the left side of a diving Christie O'Hara.  Leading 1-0, the Stags added to their lead in the 24th minute, scoring off a corner.  Felicitas Heinen scored the goal from Val Buurma and Emily Leo.

Gabby Kozlowski cut the deficit to one when she scored just two minutes later on a pass from Katie DeSandis.  Kozlowski gathered the ball in a scrum in front of the net and sent the ball just past the Stags' goalie, Maddy Sposito.

After trailing 2-1 at the break, Columbia wasted no time applying offensive pressure in the second period.  Liz Malone scored just two minutes into the half, redirecting a shot off of a goalie save.  Malone added another goal 10 minutes later when Paige Simmons sent a ball from the right corner and Malone collected it and sent it to the left of the diving goalie.

Malone completed her hat trick at the 58:31 mark when Bridget DeSandis sent a long pass into the circle from about 30 yards out and Malone redirected the shot into goal.

Heinen made it 4-3 when she converted a penalty stroke at 67:26.

Fairfield got two opportunities to tie the game as time expired on two corners, but the Stags' final shot went wide of the net.

O'Hara finished with seven saves on the day, while Sposito totaled three.  Fairfield held the edge in shots 17-16, but Columbia finished with 10 corners to the Stags' nine.

Columbia returns to action on Friday, September 29, when they host #3 Princeton at 7 p.m.
