NEW YORK - On Sunday, April 3, more than 20 Columbia field hockey alums returned to Baker Athletics Complex determined to relive their glory days by participating in a practice at the Columbia Field Hockey Venue.
The coaching staff teamed up with the alumnae reps to organize the spring practice. The enthusiastic group arrived eager to get out on the field, with the highlight of the day being the scrimmage against the current team. Despite the alumnae adding an extra player to the field every two minutes in the second half, the current Lions came out on top by a score of 6-0!
"It was a terrific turnout of Alumnae with over 20 athletes, those living locally and those who traveled for the event," said head coach Marybeth Freeman. "They played really well! Their energy was great and I know the current Columbia team was excited for them to be a part of the day. We look forward to many more events like this in the future and hope to increase the number of alumnae we can celebrate with."
Sophomore Christie O'Hara seconded this sentiment. "It was a great day with a good turnout," explained O'Hara. "The alums showed a lot of energy and gave us good competition. It was really nice to see we have the support of those that came before us, and is great to know that once we graduate we will always have a place in the Columbia field hockey family!"
Following the practice, the current student-athletes and the alumnae had the opportunity to meet and network with one-another at a delicious barbeque.
"Sunday was one of the best turn outs that we have had in several years," added Laura Cosan '07CC. "I think that the enthusiasm was driven by some of the younger alumni that came out in big numbers, yet it was also great to see some of the seasoned alums that are constant supporters whether it's at events, games, or the Alumni Practice. We all had a great time and definitely reminisced about the good ol' days ... The practice game and alumni event was concluded with a great tailgate, which further forged friendships with the current players, and allowed all of us alums to feel like studen- athletes again surrounded by the players, the parents, and the coaching staff. Overall, awesome turnout!"
