ALBANY, N.Y. – The Columbia field hockey team fell to No. 22 Albany, 2-0, on Sunday in a defensive battle. The teams combined for just eight shots on goal in the game as the Lions dropped to 7-4 on the year.

"We had a solid defensive performance only allowing six total shots on goal," head coach Marybeth Freeman stated. "But when we have stops like we did, we need to use our mids and push forward in our front field. We had trouble generating our attack today through their defense."

"We competed today. It was a game that puts us in a better place as we move forward to Penn."

Columbia fell behind in the seventh minute after allowing a penalty corner. Jessica Longstreth fed Laura Page, who settled the ball for Daphne Voormolen, who found the back of the net. That would be the only goal of the half, with both teams not able to generate much offensively.

Corrine McConnville converted on a penalty stroke in the 50th minute to add an insurance goal to secure the win.

Kimberly Pianucci made her second straight start in goal and made three saves.

The Lions will return to Ivy League play on Friday, October 12 at Penn. Game-time is slated for 6:15 p.m.
