Field Hockey Posts 15 Players on NFHCA DI National Academic Squad to Lead Ivy League
CHANDLER, Ariz. - The Columbia field hockey team led the Ivy League with 15 players represented on the 2012 Gladiator by SGI/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I National Academic Squad, as announced on Mar. 5.
Each year, the NFHCA honors student-athletes that record a GPA of 3.30 and above. This year's total marked the highest for the program in its 17-year existence.
Seniors Paige Simmons and Molly Andrews highlighted the list for the Lions, distinguishing themselves as four-time award recipients. A second team All-Ivy League selection and a member of the Academic All-Ivy squad in 2012, Simmons will earn her degree in economics and mathematics from Columbia College. Andrews is a liberal arts student who made 16 starts in her final year of competition.
Junior Danielle Cosentino, a financial economics major from Basking Ridge, N.J. was also named a Scholar of Distinction by the organization for posting a GPA of 3.90 or higher during the fall semester of the 2012-13 academic year.
"I have never seen a group of women dedicate so much of themselves to garner such successes in the classroom," head coach Marybeth Freeman said. "They epitomize the character we want represented in our field hockey program and each of them have made the University proud through their academic achievements. Congratulations to all the student-athletes recognized for this accomplishment, especially to our Scholar of Distinction Danielle Cosentino as well as our four-time NFHCA National Academic Squad members Paige Simmons and Molly Andrews. We are exceedingly proud to have them represent Columbia Hockey!"
