Five Columbia Rowers to Compete at 2012 Under 23 World Rowing Championships
NEW YORK - The 2012 Under 23 National Team roster has been set, USRowing announced recently. Twenty-one crews will represent the United States at the 2012 World Rowing Under 23 Championships July 11-15 in Trakai, Lithuania.
Among those 21 crews will be five Columbia rowers. Rising senior Mike Donohue of the heavyweight rowing squad will stroke the men's quadruple sculls. This will be Donohue's third trip to race with the U-23 team.
"Mike has gained alot of valuable experience training and racing at the U23 level," head coach Mike Zimmer said. "It is a great experience for him and for our program."
Rising senior Samantha Warren also earned a spot on the U23 team this summer. The first Columbia woman to make the team in recent history, Warren adds this honor to a growing list of accolades. Earlier this summer, Warren was named second team All-America and first team all-region by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association.
Warren will row in the bow seat of the women's quadruple sculls.
"We're extremely proud that Sam will be representing the United States at the U23 World Championships," head coach Scott Ramsey said. "She has worked incredibly hard for this opportunity and is going to bring back invaluable experience to her team at Columbia in the fall."
After a strong spring season, three Columbia lightweight rowers will compete at the U23 World Championships. Rising senior John O'Mara, rising junior Roger Stone and 2012 graduate Daniel Kirrane will all represent Columbia on the national stage.
O'Mara, Stone and Kirrane were mainstays in the lightweight first varsity boat that reached the National Championships in June. The trio helped lead Columbia to three victories in the spring and a first-place finish in the Petite Final at this year's Eastern Sprints.
Stone and O'Mara will team up in the lightweight men's quadruple sculls. Stone will row in the stroke seat and O'Mara in the three seat. Kirrane will stroke the lightweight men's four without coxswain.
"Making the U23 team is a huge honor and a major accomplishment for Dan, John, and Roger," head coach Scott Alwin said. "Representing their country is an achievement that all of our guys work towards. This summer shows that Columbia supports our guys' efforts to continue rowing beyond college."
Under 23 world champions will be crowned in 21 events including the men's single sculls, women's single sculls, lightweight men's single sculls, lightweight women's single sculls, men's double sculls, women's double sculls, lightweight men's double sculls, lightweight women's double sculls, men's quadruple sculls, women's quadruple sculls, lightweight men's quadruple sculls, lightweight women's quadruple sculls, men's pair, women's pair, lightweight men's pair, men's four, women's four, lightweight men's four, men's four with coxswain, men's eight and women's eight.
Racing begins on Wednesday, July 11, with heats. Finals will be held on Saturday and Sunday, July 14-15.
