NEW YORK – The Columbia heavyweight rowing program is set to take part in the 104th edition of the Childs Cup Regatta when they take on nationally-ranked Penn and Princeton in Philadelphia on Saturday, April 12.
SETTING THE SCENE
The Lions hosted the event in 2013 and nearly came away with an improbable victory. The Tigers held an open-water lead at the 600-meter mark only to see Columbia close the gap. However, Princeton held off the late push to claim a 2.5 second victory.
The Lions have started the spring strong, winning a pair of varsity eight races to claim the Collins Cup over Rutgers and topping Dartmouth by just over three seconds last weekend at Overpeck Park. Columbia battled the less-than-ideal conditions in the final 800-meters to secure the victory.
The No. 4 Tigers are 2-0 and claimed the Princeton-Navy Cup with a defeat of the Midshipmen on April 5.
The Quakers’ varsity eight upset Northeastern and beat out George Washington on the Schuykill River last week in separate races to move up to No. 9 in the national rankings. Penn’s top boat boasts and unblemished 3-0 mark on the young season.
