Heavyweight Rowing Takes On Yale, Penn for Blackwell Cup
NEW YORK - The Columbia heavyweight rowers will be looking to avenge last year’s loss to Yale and continue its dominance over Penn in this year’s Blackwell Cup regatta on Philadelphia’s Schuylkill River.
In last year’s Blackwell Cup, the Lions finished solidly in second place, six seconds behind Yale and three ahead of Penn, after their aggressive opening had them leading the race through the first 700 meters.
Last week Columbia and Penn battled fifth-ranked Princeton in the 103rd running of the Childs Cup on Overpeck Lake. A wayward four-man crew eliminated the Quakers from contention, while the Lions chased the Tigers all the way to the finish line, coming in only two seconds behind. Despite the defeat, the strong showing propelled Columbia to No. 9 in the USRowing Collegiate Poll, unveiled on April 17.
Meanwhile, the No. 6 team in that nation Yale spent their Saturday sweeping Dartmouth in all four races on the Housatonic River to retain the Olympic Axe.
