Heavyweights Look to Capture Doc Lusins Trophy Saturday
DIRECTIONS AND COURSE MAP OF OVERPECK LAKE
NEW YORK - Not one, but two pieces of hardware will be on the line this Saturday, April 27, when the Columbia heavyweights welcome Boston University and Syracuse to Overpeck Park.
The first varsity eight race between the Lions and Terriers will determine the winner of The Doc Lusins Trophy, and the first finisher between BU and the Orange will receive the Conlan Cup.
In their last time out, ninth-ranked Columbia faced Penn and Yale for the Blackwell Cup on Penn’s Schuylkill River course. The varsity eight went out strong, leading the Quakers wire-to-wire, but they could not hold off Yale, as the Lions finally relinquished their lead over the Bulldogs with 500 meters to go.
No. 13 Syracuse, is coming off a weekend as they were outraced by Navy and Cornell for the Goes Cup on the Severn River in Annapolis. Despite their ranking, the Orange have yet to win a varsity eight race this season.
Meanwhile, the No. 15 Terrier crew comes to Columbia on a high after knocking off Dartmouth on Boston’s Charles River for their eighth straight Bill Cup victory.
Last year’s race did not go Columbia’s way, as they were felled by both the Orange and the Terriers. However Columbia brings the highest national ranking of the three to Overpeck.
For fans interested in attending the race, there will be a spectator bus leaving 116th Street and Amsterdam at 8 a.m. that will be seated on a first-come, first-serve basis.
