Heavyweight Rowing Set for Maxwell Stevenson Cup
NEW YORK – The Columbia heavyweight rowing team has another big race on tap this weekend when they square off against Navy for the prestigious Maxwell Stevenson Cup on Sunday, May 5 on Lake Carnegie in Princeton, N.J. George Washington will also join the regatta as a guest.
This trophy, named after Columbia's top athletics administrator of the 1940's, was first presented in 1950. The Lions recently captured three straight Cups from 2008-2010 before Navy took it back in 2011 and held it in 2012, winning by just over a boat length in the varsity eight competition.
No. 7 Columbia is coming off a defeat to Boston University in the Doc Lusins Trophy regatta last weekend. The Lions were edged by 4.1 seconds by the No. 10 Terriers and fell in three additional races.
Navy’s quest for the Adams Cup came up short on April 27, falling to Harvard and Penn on the Charles River. The Midshipmen were two seconds off the pace of the Quakers for second place, but finished 10 seconds back of the No. 2 Crimson.
