PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Despite a solid start to the season, the Columbia heavyweights were not able to defeat Princeton and Penn, both Top Ten teams, in the 104th running of the Childs Cup regatta.

Princeton swept two of Columbia's three races, the first and third varsity eights, with Penn taking the second varsity. The Lions waged pitched battles with Penn in both the first and second varsity.

Columbia trailed the Quakers for second place in the first varsity eights by just 8/10 of a second and by 7.6 seconds in the 2V race. The Lions were considerably further back in the third varsity eights.

The start of the 1V race proved the Lions' undoing, as they fell well behind on the staggered start and saw Princeton pul away. But Columbia seemed to find its rhythm after the halfway point on the 2000-meter Schuylkill River course, and made up much of the margin on second-place Penn in the third 500.

With just 500 meters to go, head coach Scott Alwin noted, "they were down by only four seats." Penn felt the pressure and responded, however, holding off the Lions in the final meters to lock up second.

The second varsity eights was a different story. Columbia got off to a good start, and expanded it.

The Lions moved into the lead in the second 500 meters, holding the margin until a strong Penn eight passed them for first at the halfway point.

Columbia poured it on in the third 500 -- "We rowed really aggressively," Alwin said -- passed Princeton, and began to gain on Penn. But in the final meters, the coach said, "we ran out of gas." Penn won in 5:44.4, Princeton came in second in 5:48.2, and Columbia was third in 5:52.0.  The Lions never threatened in the 3V.

Penn and Columbia meet again next Saturday, along with Yale, in the Blackwell Cup regatta on the Housatonic. "We will use this week to make improvements," the coach noted, and close the margins on the Quakers.
