NEW YORK - Columbia Lightweight Rowing head coach Nich Lee Parker has announced that Jesse Foglia will join his staff as an assistant coach.
“We needed a very specific coach for this role,” stated Parker. “Jesse is a student of the sport and his background shows that he understands not only how to create successful crews, but also shape sustainable programs.”
Foglia arrives to Morningside Heights after spending the last two years as the assistant coach and men’s recruiting coordinator for Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. While assisting head coach Peter Steenstra at Bates, the program set a new standard in performance with banner years for both the men’s and women’s teams. Highlights included a second place finish in the men’s varsity 8+ at the 2012 ECAC Regatta, a NERC Championship in the men’s novice 4+ in 2013 and, two NCAA runner-up finishes. In addition to the team's on water performance, Foglia more than doubled the size of the men’s team by bringing in the two largest and most talented recruiting classes in program history.
Outside of his time working at Bates, Jesse spent the last five years as a member of the U.S. Men’s Junior National Team Coaching Staff. He began working alongside Parker as an assistant in 2009 for the Junior Men’s Development Team training out of Three Rivers Rowing in Pittsburgh, Pa. He has since acted as head coach for several of its programs, including the Worlds Development Team in the summer of 2013, which traveled to Banyoles, Spain for an elite training camp. Numerous athletes who started their national team experiences with Foglia on the junior development level have since gone on to represent the United States at the Junior and U23 World Championships.
A member of the inaugural Joy Of Sculling Apprenticeship program, Foglia has been mentored by some of the best minds in the sport including Paul Thompson, head women’s coach of Great Britain, and Volker Nolte. Jesse began his coaching career at Fox Chapel High School in 2005, as the men’s varsity coach.
A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., Foglia is a 2009 graduate of Duquesne University with a degree in education.
