DIRECTIONS TO OVERPECK PARK
NEW YORK – The No. 3 Columbia lightweights are back at it after a week off when they host No. 2 Princeton and No. 6 Delaware on Saturday at Overpeck Park, marking its final home regatta of the season.
SETTING THE SCENE
Last season on Lake Carnegie, the Lions finished second to the Tigers and ahead off the Blue Hens. Princeton came on strong in the final 250 meters of the race to win by two seconds. When Columbia and Princeton met on Apr. 5, it was a Lions’ surge in the final 250 meters that propelled them to a thrilling 0.1 second victory in the WIT Cup regatta.
The Lions varsity eight fell to No. 1 Cornell by three seconds in their quest for the Geiger Cup on Apr. 19, but edged out MIT by a hefty margin. On Easter Sunday, Columbia downed Dartmouth for the Subin Cup for its fifth victory on the spring. The Lions only two losses have come to top-ranked teams, the Big Red two weekends ago and Yale on Apr. 12.
The Tigers are coming off back-to-back triumphs at the Wood-Hammond Cup and Goldwait & Vogel Cups. Princeton overmatched Penn and Georgetown on Lake Carnegie on Apr. 12, winning by 9.3 seconds over the Quakers. Last weekend was a different story. The Tigers held off Yale by 0.3 seconds on the Charles River to climb up one spot in the weekly poll.
The Blue Hens knocked off Navy and Penn last weekend in Philadelphia. On the season, Delaware’s varsity eight has six victories under its belt.
